Our major focus is on development and diseases of the urogenital and the nervous systems. We aim to delineate molecular and genetic events underlying interactions between  the enteric, autonomic and sensory nervous systems and the kidneys and  lower urinary tract in normal development and to maintain homeostasis.  This informs us on fundamental concepts in organogenesis, injury, repair and regeneration. We use glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF)-RET receptor tyrosine kinase signaling as a paradigm, genetically defined mice (signaling mutants, reporter strains and conditional mice) as disease model systems and bioinformatics to achieve these goals.   As a part of our translational goals, we use modern sequencing and analytic/validation approaches to find genomic causes of genitourinary diseases including CAKUT.
